04/04/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The struggling Philadelphia Flyers will try to get back on track when they host the surging Detroit Red Wings this afternoon at Wachovia Center.
The Flyers are locked in a tight battle for a playoff seed, but Philadelphia has not helped its postseason chances with just one win in the last eight games (1-6-1).
Philadelphia enters today with 82 points, tying it with the New York Rangers for the eighth and final postseason berth in the Eastern Conference. The Atlanta Thrashers are looming just one point back, while Boston is two points ahead of the Flyers and Rangers for the seventh seed.
Detroit, meanwhile, is the sixth seed in the West and the Red Wings can clinch their 19th consecutive postseason trip with a win today. The Red Wings could qualify for the playoffs if Calgary loses in regulation to Chicago today or if the Flames lose in overtime and Detroit gains a point against the Flyers.
The Red Wings had a seven-game winning streak snapped Saturday, but picked up a point in the overtime loss against visiting Nashville. Detroit has gained a point in 12 straight games, going 10-0-2 during that stretch.
Ryan Suter scored just 16 seconds into overtime to lift the Predators to the 4-3 win at Joe Louis Arena. The victory clinched a playoff spot for Nashville, which is two points ahead of Detroit for the fifth seed.
Pavel Datsyuk scored with 36.4 ticks left in the third to send the game to overtime. Jimmy Howard stopped just 20-of-24 shots in defeat.
"Every point is huge down the stretch, and we're still fighting for position in the playoffs," Howard said.
Howard will get a rest today as veteran goaltender Chris Osgood is set to make his first start since Jan. 27. Osgood is 7-8-4 with a poor .890 save percentage this year, but he is 9-5 in 14 career games against Philadelphia.
Howard has started the last 25 games for the Red Wings, the most by any Detroit goaltender since Tim Cheveldae started 29 in a row in 1991-92.
Winger Dan Cleary could return for Detroit today after missing four straight and six of the last eight games with a groin injury. The Newfoundland native has 13 goals and 29 points in 60 games this year.
Detroit is 17-13-8 as the guest this year and has won five of its last six on the road. The Red Wings will close the regular season with three of their final four games away from the Motor City.
Philadelphia ended a five-game slide with last Sunday's win over New Jersey, but the Flyers have since dropped back-to-back games in regulation. The Flyers were handed a 6-4 road setback Thursday against the Islanders and then lost a 1-0 home decision against Montreal the following night.
The Flyers fired 35 shots at Jaroslav Halak on Friday, but the Habs netminder stopped all of them to post his fourth shutout of the season. Tomas Plekanec recorded the lone score for the Canadiens.
Brian Boucher suffered another tough defeat, making 22 saves for the Flyers, who were blanked at home for the first time since December 10.
"We played a good game," Boucher admitted. "I don't see there's anything to be really discouraged about other than the fact that we didn't get the result we wanted."
Boucher is expected to start today for the Flyers despite having a 1-6 record and two ties in his nine career games against Detroit. Sebastien Caron, who was signed Friday, will serve as the backup unless Johan Backlund is ready to return from the groin injury he aggravated last Saturday against Pittsburgh.
The Flyers will get forward Dan Carcillo back today after he was forced to sit out the last two games due to a league suspension. The enforcer was banned for high-sticking New Jersey's David Clarkson last Sunday.
Today marks the second-to-last home game of the regular season for the Flyers, who are 22-14-3 as the host despite losing three of their last four in south Philly.
The Red Wings earned a home win over Philly in the only meeting between the clubs in 2008-09 and Detroit has won four of six and seven of the last 10 encounters. However, the Flyers have won five straight and six of seven home tests against the Wings.

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds
With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.
Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season. Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.
This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy. A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.
Current betting odds Heisman trophy are:
