03/30/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A well-timed winning streak has put the Detroit Red Wings back on solid ground in regards to making the playoffs. The reigning Western Conference champions will attempt to extend their season-best run when the NHL-worst Edmonton Oilers pay a visit to Joe Louis Arena this evening.
Detroit began its post-Olympic break schedule on the outside of the West's postseason picture, but has gone 11-2-1 since returning from the league's hiatus. The surge has vaulted the Red Wings into sixth place in the conference standings, one point ahead of Los Angeles and three behind rival Nashville for the No. 5 spot.
The Wings are a scorching 8-0-1 over their last nine outings and extended their win streak to five straight games by edging the Predators in an epic shootout on Saturday. Niklas Kronwall came up with the deciding goal in the 11th round of the deciding phase as Detroit outlasted Nashville in a 1-0 thriller.
Kronwall ended a long stalemate by putting a backhander past Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne to begin the 11th round, and Jimmy Howard capped a sensational overall performance by stopping Francis Bouillon and giving Detroit a hard-earned two points.
Howard made 33 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping 10-of-11 shots in the shootout, including the final six skaters he faced. The rookie backstop improved to 8-0-1 with an outstanding 1.52 goals against average over his last nine starts.
"We practice (shootouts), but it's a little different in the games," Howard said. "I just stayed out there and let those guys make the first move."
Ironically, the Red Wings' only defeat over their nine-game tear came at the hands of the basement-dwelling Oilers, whose 55 total points is far and away the lowest amount in the league. Edmonton came away with a 3-2 home decision over Detroit on March 19, with Gilbert Brule netting the game-winning goal in the shootout segment.
That victory kicked off a three-game winning streak, but the Oilers have since come back to earth with consecutive one-goal losses to Anaheim and St. Louis.
Devan Dubnyk, who turned aside 31-of-33 shots against the Red Wings earlier this month, had another solid showing in Sunday's 2-1 setback to the Blues, finishing with 29 saves on the evening. Patrick O'Sullivan scored the lone Edmonton goal on a backhand shot midway through the first period.
"I figured I had enough time to cut in," said O'Sullivan of his score. "I just waited a little bit for [the Blues' Chris Mason] to open up his legs and slid it through with my backhand."
The loss came in the opener of a four-game road trip for the Oilers. Edmonton has dropped seven straight away tests (0-6-1) and is a woeful 8-25-3 as the visitor this season.
The Oilers have had surprising success against the Red Wings this season, however, taking all three matchups between the clubs thus far in 2009-10. That includes a 4-1 verdict at Joe Louis Arena on December 3, with O'Sullivan netting a pair of goals to lead the charge.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup
September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
