Livan Hernandez (9-9) went 6 1/3 innings and yielded five runs on eight hits but was bailed out by a 16-hit attack.

Kyle Lohse (2-6) took the brunt of the damage, surrendering 11 hits and eight runs in five innings. Reliever Mike MacDougal wasn't much better, tagged for six runs in 1 2/3 frames.

Jon Jay swatted a two-run homer and Albert Pujols had an RBI double for St. Louis, which failed to pick up ground in the National League Central race with Cincinnati's loss to the Cubs. The margin between the two clubs remains at four games.
