01/16/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New Jersey Devils look to pad their lead over the second-place New York Rangers in the Atlantic Division when the two area rivals face off this evening at Continental Airlines Arena.
New Jersey has built a comfortable eight-point advantage on the Blueshirts for the division's top spot by virtue of its strong recent play. On Saturday, the Devils recorded their eighth victory in 10 games by edging the New York Islanders in an overtime thriller at Nassau Coliseum.
Scott Gomez scored 3:40 into the extra period to lift New Jersey to the 2-1 triumph. The Devils nearly had the game won in regulation, but the Isles' Miroslav Satan forced overtime by beating Martin Brodeur with less than a second remaining in the third period.
John Madden had the first goal for the Devils and Brodeur finished with 28 saves.
New Jersey starts up a three-game homestand this evening and owns a strong 15-4-3 record at the Meadowlands for the season.
The Rangers halted a two-game losing streak with Saturday's 3-1 home victory over Boston. Michael Nylander fueled the win with a goal and an assist, the 400th helper of his career.
Martin Straka also tallied for New York, which has won five of its last seven overall, and Jed Ortmeyer netted his first goal of the season on a penalty shot in the third period.
Nylander has amassed 11 points (three goals, eight assists) during a current seven-game scoring streak and has registered an assist in five straight contests.
The Rangers have taken three of their four meetings with the Devils so far in 2006-07, including a 3-2 shootout decision at Continental Airlines Arena on January 2.
New York has generally struggled as the visitor in this series, however, as the club is just 4-19-3 (three ties) in its last 26 trips across the river.
